Discreet SomnoDent® Improves Sleep Apnea in Comfort

Image of Somnodent splintAt Sleep Birmingham, we often use the SomnoDent® Mandibular Adjustment Splint to treat mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Dr. Bruce Spink may recommend this device to reposition the muscle and soft tissue in your airways so that you can breathe more easily and enjoy a more complete night’s rest. When we fabricate your SomnoDent® appliance at our Birmingham, AL, practice, we keep your comfort in mind. The soft inner lining will allow for a secure fit without irritation of the gums.

How Does SomnoDent® Work?

Obstructive sleep apnea is a common condition that causes the soft tissues in your mouth to collapse, blocking airflow to your lungs. Your throat muscles may also constrict, narrowing your airways. Every time sleep apnea interrupts your breathing, you will wake up, unable to achieve the full night’s rest that your body needs.

SomnoDent® can help solve this problem. The splint fits over the top and bottom teeth, placing gentle pressure on the lower jaw. This pressure pushes the lower jaw forward, tightening the soft palate and repositioning muscle and soft tissue in the airway, keeping it unobstructed and open throughout the night. Dr. Spink may need to adjust your splint to achieve optimal results.

Are You a Candidate for SomnoDent®?

If you are suffering from any of the symptoms of mild to moderate sleep apnea, the SomnoDent® appliance may be right for you. Symptoms of OSA can include:

  • Chronic exhaustion
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Loud snoring
  • Frequent headaches
  • Irritability and mood swings
  • Forgetfulness or difficulty concentrating

At Sleep Birmingham, we offer several types of oral appliances that can effectively treat sleep apnea. Dr. Spink will carefully evaluate your oral structures to determine which treatment is most appropriate for you.

Dr. Spink will work with you to develop an optimal treatment plan, tailored to the degree of sleep apnea you are suffering, the type of sleep apnea you are experiencing, and your goals to restore a full night's sleep.

SomnoDent® may be suitable if your mild to moderate OSA is partially due to the position of your throat muscles. If you struggle with severe sleep apnea, the TAP® appliance may be more appropriate for you.

Benefits of the SomnoDent® Device

SomnoDent® offers several important advantages. First, the device is very comfortable, thanks in part to its soft inner lining. The device is also very discreet. Unlike some other oral appliances, SomnoDent® will allow you to fully close your mouth and lips while you are wearing it. Additionally, this device is far more subtle, convenient, and comfortable than bulky CPAP devices.

Most patients are able to adjust to the SomnoDent® appliance after just a few nights. This device may help you to enjoy a more complete night’s sleep than you have had in years. Your mood, personal relationships, work performance, and overall health may also improve, as sleep apnea can take a serious toll on your physical and mental well-being.
