The Moses® Appliance
Sleep apnea can cause a number of symptoms and increase the risk of many serious health problems. However, if you are a sleep apnea sufferer, standard continuous positive air pressure (CPAP) machines may not be effective for you. Dr. Bruce Spink provides the Moses® appliance at his Birmingham, AL practice to provide relief from sleep apnea. The Moses® is customized to your smile, designed to help realign your jaw and tongue to avoid airway obstruction while you sleep. The Moses® appliance is comfortable, and like most patients, you will likely adjust to it very quickly. Contact our office to find out if the Moses® is right for you.
How Does the Moses® Appliance Work?
The Moses® is customized to achieve a precise fit with your teeth. It performs three functions at the same time: preventing tooth movement, moving the tongue slightly forward to avoid airway obstruction, and positioning the jaw to prevent bruxism (teeth grinding). Meanwhile, it will not restrict freedom of movement in the jaw.
To provide your Moses® appliance, Dr. Spink will take impressions of your teeth and overall bite. He will also use our in-office 3-D scanner to obtain precise measurements of your teeth. He will send this information to the Moses® lab, where experienced technicians will fabricate your custom device. Thanks to Dr. Spink’s attention to detail and the advanced design of the Moses®, the device rarely needs adjustments.
The Benefits of the Moses® Appliance
The Moses® offers a number of important benefits for your health and quality of life. First, the device is very comfortable. If you previously used a CPAP machine, and were not able to adjust to the treatment, the Moses® appliance can allow you to achieve a much better night’s sleep. Additionally, the device will exert a more gentle force than other types of splints. You will even be able to drink water while wearing the Moses®. Most importantly, the Moses® appliance is effective. After you begin wearing the device, you can experience relief from the symptoms of sleep apnea and improved long-term health.
Caring for Your Moses® Appliance
When using the Moses®, it is important to maintain proper dental hygiene to prevent decay and bad breath. You should soak the splint in water every morning for 10 to 15 minutes. Dr. Spink can also recommend special cleaning products to use on a regular basis. You should also thoroughly brush your teeth before inserting your appliance. If food or bacteria are trapped under your device, they will remain in contact with your teeth for hours, raising your risk for cavities and gum disease. Meanwhile, you should never drink anything other than water when you are wearing the Moses®.
